Outgoing President’s Message

By Rorie Chinnock

My year as President has gone by very fast. I only served 11 months, since we changed the end of our year to May instead of June, but it was my second term as President. Membership has changed from 327 to 388. We were awarded an $800 bonus for chapter recruitment. Some of this is due to increase in the number of the peri-op 101 students assigned to our chapter. Please embrace and mentor our new peri-op students. We all can remember that nurse that took a little extra time during our orientation to help us over the difficult times. These are the next generation of peri-op nurses!

Events of the year included a great Fall Kick-off with a delicious dinner and speaker Lin Bruce. We had excellent and knowledgeable education sessions at our Fall Workshop, Spring Workshop, and February Jam followed by serving lunch at Ronald McDonald House. A special Thank You to Barb Wiemann and Cheryl Langford for all the work they do coordinating our educational activities. Our chapter also hosted six chapter meetings with education for total of 17 contact hours!

The highlight for me was hosting our 50th anniversary party for our December 11th meeting. It was exactly 50 years to the date from the original meeting of Chapter #2401. It was great to see friends and retired colleagues along with many of our current members. Anne Jones, as historian, along with other members did a wonderful job of capturing our history in picture scrapbooks. Then EXPO in New Orleans cannot be beat. New Orleans is definitely the ultimate party town! Expo has changed and calmed down since my first time attending Congress in 1989 in Houston, Texas. Thanks to my mentor Kathie Adams for showing me the ropes. There were big parties every night with live entertainment like Lee Greenwood. Now, the Exhibit Hall focuses more on education of new equipment and products and simulations that make our OR’s safer for our patients. I have had the privilege of attending 18 EXPOs in the last 30 years.

It takes teamwork to successfully organize and implement activities within the chapter. Thank you to all the officers, board of directors, nominating committee and committee chairs for all the work that they did. A special Thank You to Marilyn Westphal (past-President, treasurer and stereoscope editor) for her support, knowledge, and motivation!

Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing everyone at events planned in the next year!
